Probe Single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules of specific base sequence, labeled either radioactively, immunologically, or by other means, that are used to detect the complementary base sequence by hybridization.
Related Terms:
Base sequence The order of nucleotide bases in a DNA molecule. Length is usually defined as the number of base pairs. Cf. sequence, DNA sequence.
Complementary sequence Nucleic acid base sequences that can form a double-stranded structure by matching base pairs; the complementary sequence to G-T-A-C is C-A-T-G.
Hybridization The process of joining two complementary strands of DNA or one each of DNA and RNA to form a double-stranded molecule. One strand is often labeled and used as a probe to detect the presence of the second strand. Cf. hybrid.
